Swavesey Spartans – History
04 Nov 2009

The first teams to play under the banner of Swavesey Spartans were formed in 1989. The club was the brainchild of the club’s now, life president John Thornton and Swavesey Institute stalwart Martin Johnson.

Since that time the club has thrived and now boasts seven mini league and colt’s teams, with two development clubs already preparing for competitive football.

A couple of our players have gone on to join the professional ranks, the latest being Liam O’Neil who has been signed up by West Bromwich Albion and is currently serving his apprenticeship at the Hawthorns.

In 2008 Swavesey Spartans achieved formal FA recognition as a Charter Standard club; we are currently working our way towards Charter Standard Development club status.

Plans are afoot to replace the current changing facilities on the village green, with a brand new state of the art Pavilion. A project Manager has been appointed and plans are in the final phase of preparation prior to being submitted for planning approval to South Cambridgeshire District Council. This work is in association with the senior teams; Swavesey Institute and Swavesey Veterans as well as valued assistance and support from Swavesey Parish Council.

2010 sees the club celebrate its 21st anniversary, a unique celebration is planned as part of the 2010 Swavesey Festival.
