35 teams entered this Cup, whittling down to two finalists: Swavesey and Littleport who played out the final on 17th of May at Cambridge Stadium.
This was a fantastic match that really showed off the high standard of football that is played at this level. Swavesey dominated the first hour and but for superb defending and a couple of fantastic saves from their oppositions keeper would have seen them at least a couple of goals up at half time. However it was not to be, and against the run of play, Littleport found the net first. This seemed to inspire them and the game became far more even and for the neutral, a real spectacle of footballing skills and ability. Swavesey eventually levelled the score through Will Bhagat with a well worked goal and looked the more likely team to take the lead having most of the chances and possession. Eventually the pressure told and Swavesey went ahead via Matt Russell who for once lost Littleports superb defence and finished another great move involving several members of the team with just 5 or 6 minutes left to play. The boys went mad and were sure they had won it! Unfortunately the excitement unsettled their concentration, which had been faultless up to this point and Littleport took full advantage, levelling the game in the next couple of minutes. Extra time saw no further goals and Swavesey lost 4-3 on penalties. It was just so cruel, we were the better team on the pitch but lost through a couple of minutes of lack of concentration, a very harsh lesson indeed. Next year boys, next year!!
We entered Waterbeach’s tournament and got through to the final, scoring 21 goals and conceding just 2, this time they made no mistakes and won a convincing 5-0 to take the trophy!
